WMMAG's Animal Rescue Charity Run

30th November 2002

Words and pictures by Steve.

Ok, so I know it was cold, and it had been raining that morning, and we're getting close to Xmas, but what a lousy turnout! I was under the impression that bikers were a sturdy bunch, not put off by a bit of drizzle and a nip in the air - obviously I was mistaken! Around 20 people braved the elements for the mammoth voyage from Bromsgrove to Bridgnorth (all 20 miles of it).

At least the run had no problems hanging together, despite Stourbridge's best attempts with roadworks, heavy traffic, and the delight that is the Ring Road. Despite the heavier rain in the morning, it kept pretty dry while the run was on. The Stourbridge - Bridgnorth road was almost enjoyable - we must remember to go back when the roads are dry so we can truly appreciate just how scary those surprise bends are!

The Charity Run was in aid:

  • Rose Cottage Cat Rescue
  • Cuan House Wildlife Rescue,
  • Greyhound Rescue (West Of England)
These are all Animal Rescue schemes based around Shropshire. Despite the low numbers, we managed to scrape together a really decent donation of food, bowls and other animal-related equipment, with donations from some local businesses increasing the already generous donations from the people on the run.
The Animal Rescue organisers made us most welcome, with gallons of tea and coffee, along with a mountain of sandwiches and cake - as close to Biker Heaven as you can get on a cold and wet winter afternoon. They had also brought along some of the greyhounds from GRWE, which were all cute as hell, and incredibly laid back as a score of bikers fussed over them for the next couple of hours.
If you've got a soft spot cute animals, you can contact the Rescue Schemes to find out more:
  • Rose Cottage Cat Rescue: Sarah on 01694 781433
  • Greyhound Rescue (West Of England): 07000 785092 or www.grwe.co.uk

Greyhound Rescue are in dire need of people to foster or sponsor their dogs - thousands of greyhounds are bred every year, and only around 10% are any good at racing, so the rest all get abandoned or abused. You can sponsor a greyhound for just 12 a year - this contributes to their upkeep and medical bills.

Thanks.

As well as all the generous donations made by people attending the run, the following businesses also made much appreciated donations:

  • TEDS PET SUPPLIES, 97-99 HALESOWEN Rd, NETHERTON, DUDLEY, DY2-9PY. Tel: 01384-239062.
  • CREATURE COMFORTS, THE CORNBOW CENTRE, HALESOWEN.
  • PEREIRA AQUATICS 552-554 WALSALL Rd, GREAT BARR BIRMINGHAM, B42-1LR. Tel: 0121-3586238.
  • KWIK SAVE, THE CORNBOW CENTRE, HALESOWEN

An Eclectic Bunch...

As the turn-out was so poor, everyone gets a picture of their bike on this one. It's certainly a mixed bag - think we've got most forms of powered 2-wheeled transport represented.
