Some people are having trouble uploading their personal avatars, so here are a few tips to help you out.

  • File size limit it only 10KB - you will not be allowed to upload anything larger. Any photo/paint program will allow you to resize your image.
  • Maximum display is 65x65 pixels - your image doesn't have to be 65x65, but will be resized to fit these dimensions.
  • The webserver is case-sensitive.  Before you upload your image, make sure the filename (including extension) is all lower case. One member so far has had a problem because their avatar was .JPG not .jpg - some web servers are just a bit picky about this.
  • In your profile, make sure you tick the checkbox in the "I have my own pic:" section, as well as browsing to your image file. (I've missed this a few times myself)
  • Keep file names short (preferably under 8 characters)
  • You can only upload jpg or gif files, no bmp files.

If you are after a powerful but easy to use image manipulation program, try http://www.irfanview.com . Most of the images on the BCMAG site have been sorted using this program.  To resize your image, open it in irfanview, press CTRL-R, then type the new width in the Set New Size section (the height will auto-adjust to preserve the image without stretching/squeezing it). Click OK and then save your image.

If you are still struggling, email the image to steve@blackcountrymag.org.uk, along with your forum username and I'll do my voodoo on it.  There may be a small charge for this service, and it will probably fit in a whiskey glass at BFTD5  Smiley

Hope this helps.

Steve.

Go on to a website of something you'd like for an avatar, eg comic super heroes, save a picture to your desktop then use it, generally, the size has already been reduced to something you could use on here, that's wot I did, ain't got a mensa certificate for nothing you know  Grin Grin Grin
